Balthier, real name Ffamran mied Bunansa was a famous Sky Pirate in the original Final Fantasy XII.

Ffamran was just promoted to Judge. His father was so proud. However not long after Dr. Cid returned from Giruvegan, when he came back to Draklor Laboratory he started talking to someone who wasn't there. Balthier believing his father lost his sanity and the fact that Archadia was attempting to control all of Ivalice, Balthier stole a airship prototype and left a note to his father that he was leaving his job as a Judge. He also told Cid that he thought his father had started to fall apart.
